This model is concerned by many Vietnamese people in Khanh Hoa, especially Japanese market and over the world.
Specifically, after being harvested by hand, the clusters of sea grapes are cut off out of the body part. Then select the cluster with length from 6 - 9 cm and diameter from over 0,8 cm, wash it with seawater to remove withered part.
Next, sea grapes are put in the box for the boxes and nourished for 3 days with aeration in order to heal cuts, then picked up to make it dry.
After craft stage, sea grapes are put in centrifuges, then contained in liquid plastic boxes for taking sunlight to keep its freshness longer.
The first place that sea grapes were palnted and exported to Japan is Ninh Hai Ward, Ninh Hoa Town (Khanh Hoa).
Mr. Tran Tan Thinh- extension agriculture staff at Ninh Hai Ward said that in 2004 this model was tested successfully on shrimp pond with only a few hectares.
Up to now, the diameter is up to 15ha with 10 farming households. The farmers appreciate this model because it is highly efficient and friendly to environment.
With 1ha sea grape the farmers will harvest average output about 4 tons fresh sea grapes / month. They will increment approximately ten millions Vietnam dong after deducting all costs.
The local government is encouraging farmers to develop this model, however it is necessary to establish connective incorporation to stabilize the output.
At sea grape factory in local group of Dong Ha, Mr Le Nhut - director of JSC Ocean VN said “The conditions for sea grape planting here are suitable for the local soil and favored by the Japanese.”
In 2006, he started harvesting sea grapes to export the first shipment with 36kg that are accepted by Japanese market. From initial success he get motivation to continue investing in new season and expanding the area of the pond.
So far he has 3ha cultivation of sea grape ponds, the yield from 30-70 tonnes / ha / year, he obtains billions/ year after deducting all costs.
According to Mr. Nhut, in Asian countries such as Japan, Taiwan, Korea ... sea grape is very popular and used as vegetables.
Currently, over 80% of sea grapes in Vietnam is intended for export and mainly to the Japanese market.
However, to be accepted by the Japanese, he has invested in building processing factories in order to ensure product quality, complying with the procedures that the Japanese had transferred.
Following these successes, recently we have studied successfully to launch dry sea grape products. This is an important step in product preservation technology.
While fresh sea grapes can only be kept in 7 days, the preservation time of dry sea grapes which are produced by this technology, can increase up to 6 months.
There is time enough to weed grapes can go around the world by land and waterways without fear of damage, "he Nhut share.
“The time is long enough to impart sea grapes through around the world even by land or by waterways” – Mr Nhut said.
